Page 3 IMPORTANT USER SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS The most careful attention has been devoted to quality standards in the manufacture of your new voice terminal. Safety is a major factor in the design of every set. But, safety is YOUR responsibility too. Please read carefully the helpful tips listed below and on the next page. These suggestions will enable you to take full advantage of your new voice terminal. Then, retain these tips for later use. CAUTION: This voice terminal is NOT for residential use. Never spill liquid of any kind on the telephone. If liquid is spilled, however, refer servicing to proper service personnel. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble this telephone. There are no user serviceable parts. Opening or removing covers may expose you to hazardous voltages. However, note that there is a difference between 4-wire and 2-wire installations. The following are the ONLY acceptable devices for use in a 4-wire installation: (Note that two protectors are needed at each installation point. It is recommended that the 1145A and the 1145B Bulk Power Supplies be used as auxiliary power for the 8434DX voice terminal. This jack is labeled. (On some 8403 voice terminals, you must thread the cord into the channel leading to the side edge of the voice terminal; the handset cord will then lead off the side of the voice terminal.) Adjusting the 8405 and 8410 Voice Terminal Desktop Stand To provide better display visibility on the 8405D, 8405D Plus, and 8410D set, the desktop stand on these terminals can be installed in a high or low position. (When the voice terminal is shipped from the factory, the stand is in the low position. Page 16 Wall Installation NOTE: The 8403, 8405, and 8410 voice terminals can be wall-mounted. The 8411 and the 8434DX voice terminals CANNOT be wall-mounted. For wall-mounting, you need a 1-foot D8W line cord (not supplied with the voice terminal; Comcode: 103786760). To wall-mount the 8403, 8405, and 8410 voice terminals 1. Make sure the 8-conductor wall mount plate is in place. 2. Press down on the handset retainer hook located under the handset and slide it toward the top of the voice terminal. See Figure 6. 3. Page 17 4.<a href=""></a></p><p> Place the voice terminal face down on a flat surface and turn the terminal face down. 5. Remove the desktop stand which is attached to the base of the voice terminal by tabs on the top and back of the stand. See Figure 7. — Press inward on the top of the stand until you can lift the top of the stand out of the tab slot on the voice terminal. — Lift the bottom of the stand out of the lower tab slot(s). Snap the free end of the handset cord into the handset and place the handset in the cradle. NOTE: The handset hook you repositioned will hold the handset in place. 12. Lift the handset and listen for dial tone. If there is no dial tone, check all wire connections to make sure they are secure. Also, perform a self-test to see if the terminal is receiving power. (Press and hold down the Test button. The adjunct requires auxiliary power from either a local, individual power supply or a closet supply serving multiple phones. You can use the RS-232-D jack for connecting the 8411 to a PC for use with PassageWay Solution software. The Analog Adjunct jack can be used for connecting an answering machine, fax machine, modems, audio teleconferencing equipment or TTY machines commonly used by the hearing impaired. Page 22 WARNING: Do NOT connect the Analog Adjunct to the wall jack. It will cause equipment damage. NOTE: When an 8411 voice terminal is administered at a DEFINITY G3V4, Issue 3, switch, the voice terminal must be administered to use the appropriate analog telephone line. For more information on administration of the 8411, see “Switch Administration” later in this manual. Page 24 LABELING THE DESIGNATION CARD The designation card is a removable card placed behind a transparent protective cover on which the user can type or print call appearance or feature assignments.</p><p> In most cases, the voice terminal’s designation card is filled out before the user begins to use the set. Do not discard the blank button designation card. Instead, if there is a preprinted designation card, place it over the blank button designation card which comes with the voice terminal. The button labels on this larger card are blank; that is, they are NOT prelabeled with letters like the smaller card. If an analog adjunct is connected to the 8411, type “analog” in the Data Option: field on the first administration screen. On the last administration screen, enter the appropriate information for the Analog Adjunct. PROGRAMMING OPTIONS ON THE 8411 VOICE TERMINAL Use the following procedures for selecting options for an 8411 voice terminal. For a list of PassageWay indications, see “PassageWay and Analog Adjunct Status Indications on the 8411” earlier in this manual. NOTE: The basic 8434 (8434D0 1A) voic e terminal i s no lon ger manufact ured. Applications The 8434 a nd 8434DX voice te rminals can be used with th e DEFINITY Communi cations System G eneric 1, G eneric 2, or Gener ic 3, the DEFINITY ECS, Syste m 75, or Sy stem 85. The se terminal s are appr opriate ter minals for users who hand le numer ous calls and who nee d button acce ss to a wi de variety of feature s. For ex ample, the 8434 and 84 34DX voi ce terminals, with their l arge number of administ rable bu ttons, can us e the Abbr eviated Dia ling featu re for reach ing many fr equently called p arties. Th e buttons of the 8434 and 8434DX voice terminals can als o be assign ed for br idging c alls at othe r sta tions. T ypical users are secr etaries, managers, s alespeo ple, buye rs, answ ering groups, and call coveri ng posi tion s. The 8434 a nd 8434DX voice te rminals can also p rovide the user with simult aneous voi ce and data c ommunic ations. The 843 4 and 8434D X can be connec ted to a 74 00B Plus Dat a Module i n a 4-wire environmen t, or to an 840 0B Plus Data Module in a 2-wire en vironm ent.</p><p> With t he 8434 and 8434DX voic e termin als, PC platform products can be use ful in pro viding voi ce capabi lities s ince these s creen-ba sed prod ucts ca n greatly en hance the teleph one capab ilities of these v oice termi nals.The rest o f the buttons c an be used for more call ap peara nces (in cluding bridged appearan ces of o ther sta tions ’ extens ions) and featur es. Buttons adm inistered for features have only their status lights active. Message Light The red Me ssage light g oes on when a m essage is l eft for the vo ice termina l user. The ligh t goes off when th e user retri eves the mes sage or whe n the messag e is erased. Thi s light is labeled either Mes sage or. The sp eakerphone can be tur ned off or on with the SPEAKE R button, can b e muted wit h the MU TE button, an d the volu me can be controlled with the VOLUME “ arrow” button. If the voice ter minal has a SHIF T button and Rest Spkr appears below the SPEA KER button, the user c an access the Rese t Speakerph one featur e to adjus t the spe akerphon e for optima l performan ce. NOTE: If there i s not a SH IF T b utton and Re set Spkr d oes NOT ap pear under the SPEAKE R button, th e voice termi nal will adj ust to the surroundi ng environ ment by its elf. The use r does not n eed to do an ything ma nually. By press ing the SHIF T bu tton and then the SP EAKER button (if the voice ter minal is se t for the Spea kerphon e feature), t he user hears a set of to nes as the speak erphone per forms an ac oustic tes t of the envir onment. When the tone s stop, th e speake rphon e has fini shed adj usting it self and is ready for use. The user should reset the s peakerphon e whenever the voice terminal is m oved to an other place (even in the same room), whenever the red ligh t next to th e SPEAKE R button i s fluttering, and in th e unlike ly event tha t the speak erphone is making a squeal ing soun d (in this las t case, t ones will no t be heard during a c all).</p><p> Speaker (List en-only) Fea ture Althoug h the 84 34 and 843 4DX voic e terminals are sh ipped fr om the fact ory with the term inal se t for the S peakerphon e feature, the 8434 an d 8434DX voi ce termin als can be optioned i nstead for a 1-way, lis ten-only s peaker. If this i s the case, us e the SPE AKER button o n the front of t he voice termina l for turning o n and o f f the speaker. The Spea ker (lis ten-only) c apability al lows a us er to engag e in a 1-w ay conve rsation with the far-end. Specific ally, the user can o nly listen to the far-en d. T o speak with the far- end, the user must use th e handset which tur ns off the speak er. Th e Speaker fu nction may also be d isabled. MUTE Button The MU TE button di sables the transmit ter of the speakerpho ne or the handset dependi ng on whic h is activ ated at that time. A red light nex t to the MUTE but ton goes on when the Mu te feature is activa ted. VOLUME Control Button The 8434 a nd 8434DX voice te rminals ha ve a VO LUME “arrow” button. Thi s butto n has sever al funct ions. When the u ser is on a call us ing the sp eaker or speak erphone, the V OLUME b utton control s the vo lume of the speaker o r When th e user is on a call usin g the handse t, the VOL UME button controls th e handset volume. W hen the v oice termin al is id le, the VO LUME co ntrol but ton adjusts the tone ringer. When th e user sets the volume for the s peaker, speakerphone, handset, or the tone ringer, the disp lay on the voice te rmin al shows a “bar array ” that in dicates the volume setting. TEST Button When th e voice ter minal is i nitially p owered up, the green li ght next to the TEST button fl ashes if the link with th e PBX is not (or no t yet) operati onal. The li ght change s to stea dy green w hen the voice te rmin al is able to communi cate with the PBX. A fter the voi ce termina l is powe red up, you c an press the TEST butt on to test the lights and the d isplay on your vo ice term inal.</p><p> Disp la y The 8434 a nd 8434DX voice te rminals are equipp ed with a bu ilt-in, 2-line by 40-cha racte r VFD d ispla y. Softkeys The five buttons l ocated below the display and label ed with arr ows corresp ond to featu res list ed on the second li ne of the displa y screen. (T here are five features on each fe ature option screen.) The user can access any of th e 15 features by pres sing the so ftke y bel ow th e feat ure abbre viat ion. The fol lowing tab le list s some of the alternate softkey fea tures, those feature s that can be subs tituted for the default s oftkey featur es listed above and on the pr evious pa ge. NOTE: The DEFINITY E CS Rele ase 5 (and l ater relea ses) may provide additional alternate softkey fea tures. 1. On a DEFINI TY Generic 2 or a System 85, thi s feature is named C all Forwa rd - Follow Me. 2. On a DEFINITY G 2 and a System 85, there is no Call Park fe ature tha t can be assi gned to a feature button. In order to have the Call Park fu nction on a softke y or hard b utton, adminis ter the butt on as an Ab breviated Dial bu tton and p rogram the Call Park trunk group acce ss code on to it. This button can th en be lab eled “Call Park.” In add ition, on a DEFINITY G2 or Sy stem 85, the Recal l feature m ust be ad minister ed on a st andard feature button.It is als o desirable for a NEXT DISPL AY button to be admin istered. T his feature is not availab le on a DEFINIT Y G2 or Sys tem 85. 2. This feature i s availa ble only on a DEFINITY G 3V2 (and l ater) switch es. 3. This featu re is not avail able on a DEFINITY G2 or System 85. The letters “Q” and “Z” hav e been added to the appropriate dial pad keys for di rectory acc ess, and the “5” button o n your dial pad has raised bar s for visua lly-impa ired users. The 8434DX ha s an Expans ion Modul e (“ EX MOD” ) jack on the back of th e voic e term inal t o al low co nnect ion of an 801A expansi on module. Cords T wo cords ar e supplie d with the 8434 and 8434D X voice te rminals: a coiled 9- foot modular handse t cord and a 7-foot mod ular line c ord. Option al longer c ords are av ailable: a 12-foot hand set cord, 1 4-foot and 25-foot line co rds. Ringing The 8434 a nd 8434DX voice te rminals ha ve elec tronic tone ringing wit h eight possibl e ringin g patterns th at can be selected wi th the RING button on s ome 8434 and 8434 DX voic e terminals; on other voice ter minals, the user pres ses the SHIF T bu tton and the HOLD button in order t o choose a ringing p attern. The loud ness o f the tone ringer can be con trolled by the VOLUME “ arrow” button. (The us er must NOT be on a speakerpho ne call. If the user i s using the speak erphone, the V OLUME “ arrow” button controls the volum e of the speak erphone.) Mounting Options The 8434 an d 8434DX v oice termin als com e equipped with a nonad justable desk stand. Th ese voice terminals cannot be wall- mounted.</p><p> Color Op tions The 8434 a nd 8434DX voice te rminals ar e availabl e in bla ck and in whi te. The table bel ow describ es the pins on an 8400- Series voi ce termin al LINE ja ck. NOTE: Regardle ss of which configur ation is in use, ALL wiring betwe en the PB X and the ter minal MU ST consist of twi sted-pair s, includi ng the mod ular line cord. The line cor d must be a D 8W, whi ch con sists of four twisted-p airs, or a Lucent T ech nologies -appro ved equi valent. T wi sted-pair wiring is us ed to make lines l ess sensi tive to cr osstalk. Therefore, fai lure to use twis ted pair wiring may result i n less-than -optimum performanc e of the termina l and may also co ntribute to p roblems wi th the line. An 8-wire modular cord MUST be used for all 4-wire an d any 2- wire install ations requ iring au xiliary power. NOTE: Y ou do NOT need to ch ange any setti ngs on the voice ter minal for 2-wire or 4-wire ins tallatio ns. The vo ice termin al is able t o detect wh ether it is in a 2-wire or a 4-wire conf iguratio n. For 2-wire operation, i f you need to plug the voice termi nal into a 4-pin or 6-pin wall jack, in stead of a standar d 8-pin modu lar jack, refer to the “Line Interface ” table to i nsure tha t the wires f rom the 4-pi n or 6-pin wall jack are connecte d to the co rrect pin s on the term inal “LINE” j ack.B ridgin g or parallel ing of thes e pairs can result i n damage t o the ter minal or c an caus e the PB X circuit p ack to remove po wer to the terminal. Distance Limit ations The follo wing circ uit packs can be us ed with all of the 8400- Series sets.</p><p> In 4-wire operation, the voi ce termin al must be withi n 5,000 fe et of the PBX us ing 22-gau ge or 24-ga uge wire, and within 4,000 feet o f the PBX us ing 26-gaug e wire. In 2-wire operation, the voi ce termin al must be withi n 5,500 fe et of the PBX us ing 22-gauge wire, within 3,500 feet of the PBX using 24-gauge wire, and withi n 2,200 feet of the PBX us ing 26-gaug e wire. Power Requiremen ts The 8434 a nd 8434DX voice te rminals are phantom -powered fr om the sys tem cabine t on the di gital pairs of the line w iring. In orde r to use the d isplay on the 8434 or 8434DX voi ce terminal or, with the 8434 DX, connect a nd use an 801A e xpansio n module, you must connect a n T able 12-27.Rec ommended local power supp lies are the 1 15 1A1 power supply and the 1 151 A2 power su pply with Battery Holdov er. Th e 1 14 5A and 1 14 5B1 are re comme nded bulk pow er suppl ies. See the sec tion titled Ad jun ct P owe r in this manu al for mo re informa tion about these powe r suppl ies. Switch Administr ation Alia sing Use the following table to admi nister the 8 434 and 843 4DX voic e termin als: NOTE: The voic e terminal can be ad minister ed so it c an acce ss the softk ey featu res OR it can be adm inistered so that it has acc ess to mor e coverage buttons.In this c ase, there c an be up to 34 call appearance s (includ ing brid ged call appearance s), but t he 15 softkey features wi ll NOT be functio nal becau se the Feature Ke y Module i s not allowed wit h the 7434 or 7444. On the 7434, the Di splay Modu le is a 1 -line disp lay, and t hus the 1-l ine display option should be sele cted. If the set is admini stered as a 7444, it can be opti oned for a 2- line disp lay. Figure 13-23 refers to the 8434 and 8434DX voice t erminal co nnected to a Syste m 75, a DEFINITY G1 or G3, or a DEFINITY EC S; Figure 13-24 refers to the 8434 and 8434DX v oice termi nal conne cted to a S ystem 85 or a DEFINITY G2.
